No food, no money a heavyweight problem
A former heavyweight boxer has won support from the Ministry of Social Development and charity Eat My Lunch for his grassroots south Auckland foodbank.
Dave Letele has been providing food packs and social services from his Buttabean Motivation headquarters after spotting the need through his community advocacy work.
He says every day there seems to be a new crisis, such as a father who came in yesterday.
"He had two young kids. He is living in emergency housing behind our HQ. He's got no food, no money. These poor kids are hungry. He came in to ask for food. He had minus $10 in his account, two young kids and no food. This just highlights what is going on," he says.
Mr Letele says food seems to be becoming a luxury for vulnerable whānau in his area.
