Maori lived experience boosts academic achievement
The co-editor of a new book on Māori academics says their stories offer a window into the Māori world view.
Jacinta Ruru says the 24 scholars who contribute to Ngā Kete Mātauranga show their courage and vision in an environment which is often hostile to Indigenous ways of knowing.
Many draw on their humble beginnings, such as Landcare Research economist Dr Shaun Awatere.
"He'll talk about growing up with not much materially but a lot rich in terms of the tikanga of our culture and also that collecting of kaimoana and that collecting of kaimoana enabled showed to him this whole economic world view and economic value that has really gone on and inspired him in his own career," Professor Ruru says.
Ngā Kete Mātauranga, edited by Jacinta Ruru and Linda Waimarie Nikora, is published by Otago University Press.
