NZ marine protection lagging international trend

Greens co-leader James Shaw says it’s time to take action on protecting New Zealand’s marine environment.
Attempts last term to follow through on John Key’s promise to turn the seas around the Kermadecs north of New Zealand into a giant marine sanctuary were stymied by opposition from New Zealand First and from iwi whose development rights to the fishery would be extinguished.
Mr Shaw says there is an international movement with more than 50 countries now pledging to protect a third of exclusive economic zones by 2030, but in New Zealand less than 1 percent of the EEZ is in marine protected areas.
James Shaw says National botched the Kermadecs plan by failing to take into account the Māori Fisheries Settlement, but he believes a way can be found to do it.
