Ngati Whatua Orakei hikoi to court

Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei will hīkoi from its marae to the Auckland High Court on Tuesday to mark the start of an 11-week hearing into the crown’s treaty settlement cross claims policy.
Chair Marama Royal says the route goes past two sites which have been earmarked for the Marutūāhu settlement, a reserve at Taurarua Judges Bay and a property at Waipapa at the foot of Constitution Hill below the court.
The hapū says that offer is in breach of its rights of mana whenua.
Ms Royal says it’s unfortunate the matter had to go to court.
"In order for us to ensure our mana whenua and our ahi kaa is protected, this is where we have needed to go," she says.
Manama Royal says tikanga should be part of common law.
