Police have closed down a so called iwi information centre set up at Waiōmio by Tai Tokerau Border Control.

Iwi members including former MP Hone Harawira started the checkpoint about 9am to advice motorists about COVID-19 precautions.

The police closed it down just after 11am.

District commander Ricky Whiu said it was looking more like a checkpoint than an information stop, and there were traffic safety concerns.
