Maori connection critical for new Oranga Tamariki boss

Minister for Children Kelvin Davis says an ability to work with Māori will be an essential requirement for the next head of Oranga Tamariki.

Ministry head Grainne Moss resigned on Friday to take up a new role overseeing pay equity reforms.

Mr Davis praised what he says was the dignified way she stepped down from what is one of the toughest roles in the public service.

Former Te Puni Kōkiri head Sir Wira Gardiner will be acting chief executive for six months while a replacement is sought.

Mr Davis says they’re looking for the best person for the job.

"And obviously some of the skills the best person needs I believe is understanding, in-depth knowledge of te ao Māori, te reo Māori, the ability to engage with Māori communities and whānau and a proven track record of doing that," he says.

Kelvin Davis says the many of the problems with Oranga Tamariki came from deep-seated structures and practices, and Grainne Moss has led the organisation through significant change.
