More putea for COVID recovery conservation jobs

Another $34 million is being put into the Jobs for Nature fund, which could create more than 400 jobs in ecology, restoration, trapping, pest control, fencing and project management.

It is being made available to conservation groups and landowners to employ staff and contractors in a move aimed at boosting local biodiversity-focused projects,

Conservation Minister Kiritapu Allan says the money will boost local biodiversity-focused projects.

An $18 million Private Land Biodiversity Fund is for organisations that support landowners including farmers to work together to protect and restore rare habitats that safeguard populations of native species on private land.

A $16 million Community Conservation Fund is available to community groups for projects on public and private land that aim to conserve New Zealand’s indigenous biodiversity.

Ms Allen says it will help established community groups scale up their projects.

The investment is part of the $1.245 billion Jobs for Nature COVID-19 recovery package aimed at providing nature-based job opportunities for 11,000 people over the next four years.
