Cultural cooks need to keep heat in hangi
Fire and Emergency New Zealand is giving tips on safe cultural cooking over the summer.
Kaupapa Māori national manager Piki Thomas says while people may not need a permit for a hāngī, umu or lovo, those preparing underground ovens need to expect hot, dry and windy conditions.
Hāngī, umu or lovo should be at least three metres away from any part of a building, hedge, shelterbelt or any other structure with combustible material.
Cooks also need a water hose handy in case the fire gets out of control.
And tell your neighbours so they don't call the fire brigade
The same advice applies to gas-operated and charcoal barbecues and pizza ovens.
