Disruption needed to house Maori

A tribal development advocate says disruptive change is needed to get Māori into their own homes.
Willie Te Aho attended yesterday’s Māori housing summit in Wellington with a message from iwi from Tūranga to Ōpōtiki that 500 new houses were needed in the rohe in the next four years.
He says the current policy settings and programmes just aren’t delivering for Māori.
"We need a major disruption if we are going to tackle the homelessness issue. We need a major issue if we are going to lift Māori home ownership from 25 percent up to 75 percent which it used to be in the 1970s. So we are ready and we need to move quickly with full support from government if we are to do something that disrupts the system and creates a better outcome for our people," Mr Te Aho says.
