Booze ad rules too loose for docs

The New Zealand Medical Association wants a crack down on alcohol marketing which is disproportionately targeting tamariki Māori and Pasifika children.
Association chair Kate Baddock says the latest Advertising Standards Authority code for alcohol does not go far enough in protecting New Zealand children and disadvantaged groups from the harmful effects of alcohol marketing.
It wants the Government to heed a Law Commission recommendation to phase out all forms of alcohol advertising.
Dr Baddock says the council’s submission to the Advertising Standards Authority also called for an end to the availability of extremely cheap alcohol, which is often sold as ready-to-drink products.
