Maori Aquaculture Settlement revisited
The Māori Affairs select committee has called for submissions on the Māori Commercial Aquaculture Claims Settlement Bill.
Chairperson Tamati Coffey says some iwi have experienced delays in receiving their aquaculture settlement assets from the trustee, Te Ohu Kai Moana.
The bill seeks to improve the allocation and transfer process by amending the 2004 settlement Act to;
– ensure iwi get their aquaculture settlement assets within an appropriate timeframe;
– improve how the Crown carries out its aquaculture settlement obligations;
– protect the interests of iwi who do not wish to claim their aquaculture settlement assets;
– and support both the aspirations of iwi and the growth of the aquaculture industry.
