Teacher to world Rose Pere dies
Māori educationalist Rangimarie Te Turuki Arikirangi Rose Pere, who developed an international reputation for upholding and sharing indigenous knowledge, has died aged 83.
Her Facebook page announced Dr Pere, who was awarded an honorary doctorate by Victoria University in 1996, has left this physical world to journey onwards.
Dr Pere, from Ngāi Tūhoe, Ngāti Ruapani, and Ngāti Kahungunu, was raised in Waikaremoana by her grandparents.
She taught from preschool to tertiary level and distilled her teachings into influential publications including AKO – Concepts and Learning in the Māori Tradition from 1982 and Te Wheke: A celebration of infinite wisdom in 1991.
Her family says her life was distinguished by extraordinary service to many people in Aotearoa New Zealand and in the many corners of the world.
