Parliament tie up as party pushes for new norms

Whether it’s ties or raising questions about Oranga Tamariki, the Māori Party is determined to shake up parliament.
That’s the response from Debbie Ngarewa-Packer to Speaker Trevor Mallard saying Rawiri Waititi would not be called again to speak unless he was in suitable attire – meaning wearing a tie.
She says her co-leader was wearing a taonga in place of a tie, as is culturally appropriate for Māori.
"What we are trying to do is say is these are Pākehā norms but actually our tupuna had their own norms and we have our norms and there is a place for it and if we can't have it as a tiriti partner we have to push to see our tikanga, we have to push to see tangata whenua have arrived. They're not takahi, they're actually respectful of the kaupapa," Ms Ngarewa-Packer says
Debbie Ngarewa Packer says the Māori Party’s question swap with ACT last week was a one-off to allow it to ask two questions yesterday, and in future, it will work with the Greens on any such procedural issues.
