Digital design puts Te Purapura pupils ahead in te reo
A young teacher who established a junior bilingual unit at an Onehunga school is the winner of the first National Excellence in Teaching Awards’ early career award.
Moana Tautua started teaching four years ago after a media career, and moved to Te Papapa School this year to set up Te Purapura.
Despite COVID-19, she built strong relationships with her tamariki and their whānau through her vision of restoring mana to te reo Māori, and designed a digital learning programme to keep them engaged.
By term three, Te Purapura students were reading in both English and Te Reo.
