Stats NZ keen to boost iwi data platform

Government Statistician Mark Sowden is welcoming the advent of a new online storehouse of data designed to make iwi data more relevant, accessible and useful for iwi needs.
Development of Te Whata has been resourced by Stats NZ Tatauranga Aotearoa under the Mana Ōrite Relationship Agreement with the Data Iwi Leaders Group and Te Kāhui Raraunga Charitable Trust.
Mr Sowden says Te Whata is ground-breaking and easy to use, providing iwi with access to data and insights that are relevant to their own contexts.
Problems with the 2018 census means Stats NZ was unable to update official counts of iwi, but the Data Iwi Leaders Group is working with the department on how iwi can use what data was collected.
It’s also in discussions with other government agencies to provide more data for the new platform.
