Stuff says sorry for racist stuff-ups

Media organisation Stuff has issued a public apology after investigating the way it has portrayed Māori from its first editions in the 1800s to now.
Today it published a report Ta Matou Pono – Our Truth, reviewing the way its newspapers had been racist and contributed to stigma, marginalisation and stereotypes against Māori.
Pou Tiaki editor Carmen Parahi, who with editorial director Mark Stevens led a team of 20 examining all its digital and print publications, says the day of reckoning is a long time coming and the exercise should mark the beginning of better representation in its reporting of all people in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Mr Stevens says coverage of Māori issues over the last 160 years ranged from racist to blinkered, and it was seldom fair or balanced in terms of representing Māori.
Stuff also published a new charter, including acknowledgement of Treaty of Waitangi principles, and a commitment to redress wrongs to Māori.
