Kura a iwi set path for next five years

The Ministry of Education and kura Māori have agreed on how they can work together while maintaining the independence of Māori schools.
Watson Ohia from Ngā Kura ā Iwi o Aotearoa says the five-year agreement signed today aims to address issues with equity that run across the education system.
Mana Ōrite will solidify the working relationship the two organisations have had since 2016, while Kua Ea covers strategic priorities like maintaining autonomy, employment for school leavers and cultural competency.
"It's about the ministry supporting our plan, supporting our vision. When we get into detail, some things we will find it difficult to agree with, but the heart of the agreement is about working in partnership," Mr Ohia says.
Education Secretary Iona Holsted says the new funding agreement shows the ministry’s intent to create equity within the system, while also providing Ngā Kura ā Iwi o Aotearoa greater autonomy and agency to grow.
