Iwi Radio learning tool earns technology prize

Kaitaia-based Te Hiku Media has taken out the Community Tech Champions award at this year's New Zealand CIO Awards for developing technology tools for te reo Māori revitalisation.
Its long-running Papa Reo artificial intelligence project aims to develop a multilingual platform for natural language processing and machine learning tools, stating with using Māori language data to teach computers to speak Māori.
General manager Peter Lucas Jones says the project incorporated cutting edge digital tools with tikanga Māori values.
"Whilst there's a very Pākehā-centrecity to the whole theme of innovation and technology development it's important to remind ourselves of what motivates us and the work we do as iwi radio which is our reo Māori and our tikanga Māori and that's what's leading our transformation and what we hope to achieve this year and over the seven years of this project," he says.
