Iwi frustrated at partnership window dressing

Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Ruanui is accusing Oranga Tamariki of window dressing in its so-called partnerships with iwi.
Chair Hamiora Maruera says despite establishing a section 396 accreditation partnership with the agency, the iwi’s request to assist a single child’s return to safe care within the wider whānau has been blocked.
Instead, Oranga Tamariki is advocating the child be placed permanently with non-kin.
Mr Maruera says the agency is maintaining its old approach of gatekeeping and control.
He says the experience of his iwi is in line with the findings of the Children’s Commissioner’s Te Kuku O Te Manawa report and gives weight to its recommendations for a transfer of resources from government to enable by Māori, for Maori care.
