Mayor breaks ranks to back occupation

The Taxpayer's Union has slammed Wellington mayor Andy Foster for helping Mau Whenua protesters raise tents for an occupation of Shelly Bay.
Disaffected Taranaki Whānui members are trying to block development of the former waterfront defense base on the Miramar Peninsula until the High Court has considered their challenge to the sale of the land by Port Nicholson Block Settlement Trust to developer Ian Cassels.
Union spokesperson Louis Houlbrooke says the mayor is refusing to accept a clear majority decision by his council to allow the development to proceed.
He says Mr Foster's backing of an illegal land occupation opens Wellington ratepayers to a damages claim or expensive settlement for the development’s investors.
If developers don’t have certainty of their right to develop land they own, housing won’t get built and the affordability crisis will deepen.
