Maori education plan needed to tackle NCEA void

The New Zealand Māori Council says new Ministry of Education data showing more than 3000 rangatahi Māori left school last year with no NCEA qualification shows the need for a Māori-led education plan.
In all 12 per cent of school, leavers did not have a qualification, up from 11 per cent in 2018, with Māori making up almost half the total.
Council executive director Matthew Tukaki says not having a plan to address the problem is a breach of the Treaty of Waitangi by the ministry.
He says the challenges in education this year because of the pandemic including the digital divide many Māori whānau are on the wrong side of means the proportion of Māori students failing this year is likely to increase.
He says the ministry has focused on bringing in overseas teachers without doing nearly enough to boost kura, kaiako and teaching resources to boost learning among tamariki Māori.
