Fishy pricing sparks supermarket review

The head of the Mangere Budgeting Service is welcoming a Commerce Commission review of supermarket pricing.
Darryl Evans says food prices, along with housing and energy costs are crippling the average whanau.
He says it means kids go hungry because there is not food in the house, or families rely on unhealthy food options like fish and chip packs.
“A fish and chip pack in south Auckland is $20 – four pieces of fish, chips, four sausages and some potato fritters. Is it healthy? No. Does it fill your kids’ stomachs? Yes, absolutely. The rest of the food, especially anything we would consider healthy, is so expensive,” Mr Evans says.
He says he doesn't know why Consumer Affairs Minister David Clark has given the commission 12 months to complete the review, and he would like to see action taken earlier, including removing GST from staples like milk and bread.
