Taylor got message across in Rudy reo
Hundreds of mourners have been through Mataitaua Marae in Horeke to pay a final tribute to Ngāpuhi kaumātua and Labour Party stalwart Rudy Taylor, who died on Monday.
Tāmaki Makaurau MP Peeni Henare says people from all walks of life have shared their stories of the big man with the big heart and a big voice.
"Despite the fact my matua Rudy wasn't a native speaker or a fluent speaker by any stretch of the imagination – he would always seemingly butcher our language – however, everyone on the marae knew what he was saying, where it was coming from and why he was saying it and I think it's those kind of stories I will remember and the rest of us will remember for our matua Rudy who served his people and served his people well so our thoughts are on Mataitaua Marae today as they lay him to rest," Mr Henare says.
