A South Taranaki iwi says it will take further action if the Supreme Court allows seabed mining.

An appeal by Trans Tasman Resources against the blocking of its permit to mine up to 50 million tonnes of ironsand a year from wound up today.

Ngāti Ruanui chair Haimona Maruera hopes the court will uphold the Court of Appeal ruling that the Environment Protection Agency’s consent and decision-making failed to adequately protect the marine environment or give effect to the iwi’s treaty rights and kaitiakitanga relationship with the moana.

But he says it is not taking anything for granted and is preparing for all options.

He says the case was an opportunity to finally stop TTR’s seabed mining permit and end the struggle to protect the moana and coastlines.
