FOMA counts on better returns form RCEP
Māori exporters are looking to get more value out of their products with the signing of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership at the weekend.
Federation of Māori Authorities chair Traci Houpapa says Māori exporters want lower tariffs – which will happen gradually – and better returns.
She says Māori will benefit from having a single set of rules for getting goods into 15 countries, and a requirement that shipments be cleared within six days will increase the value of New Zealand’s food exports.
"So it means that we get a better return on our good and services and our property going into the market and it reduces the tariff or the cost of going into the market and that is significant for us. It means money stays in our pocket that we can reinvest into businesses here," Ms Houpapa says.
Some of the premium that may be gained from exports should come back as better wages and conditions for those working in the primary sector.
