Maori unemployment needs targeted response

The Council of Trade Unions says the quarterly Labour Market Statistics highlight the need for the Government to do more to support working people, particularly Māori, Pasifika and women.
CTU economist Andrea Black says while the overall unemployment rate is 5.3 percent, it’s 5.8 percent for women and 8.8 percent for Māori.
She needs to be specific initiatives to target those groups.
There also needs to be fair pay agreements and more investment in social infrastructure such as early childhood, midwives and care workers, where Māori and Pasifika women are disproportionately represented.
