Words of a Kaumatua wins book award

A children’s book and one collecting the wisdom of an esteemed kaumatua shared the honours in the new te reo Maori category of the Society of Authors’ Heritage Book Awards.

Haare Williams: Words of a Kaumatua, was edited by Witi Ihimaera and published by Auckland University Press.

The children’s book, Whakarongo ki o Tupuna by Darryn Joseph is published by Oratia Press.

Judge Hana O’Regan says not only will the books add to the richness of literature available to those hungry for te reo, but they will almost certainly help inspire others to follow suit.
