Tee off for tikanga a golf wananga bonus

New Zealand Māori Golf and New Zealand Golf are teaming up to get more rangatahi on the greens.
Māori Golf vice president Crete Wana says the two organisations met formally last year for the first time in NZ Golf's 100 year history, and one outcome was a wānanga earlier this month in Whakatane in which Māori teens could both develop their skills on the course and learn some taha Māori.
He was impressed with the contribution made by the national coach, Jay Carter.
"He was trying to embed tikanga into their golf learning. Jay Carter is a Pākehā so getting him to understand what we were trying to do and then implement it through what he was trying to develop was awesome," he says.
Crete Wana says the COVID lockdowns has created a new focus on exercise that is encouraging more people to take up the clubs.
