Social media driving young voter
A first-time voter from Ruatōria says rangatahi get their political insights from social media.
Hunaara Waerehu, who turned 18 in August, is a student at Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Waiū o Ngāti Porou where he earned New Zealand's top NCEA result in Te Reo Rangatira language assessment.
The National Party member and staunch supporter of East Coast candidate Tania Tapsell says young people don't get politics from public meetings.
"Social media is now the avenue where most people, especially young people find information about politics, find information about the candidates and find information about the political parties and where they stand," he says.
Hunaara Waerehu says Ngāti Porou has produced some of the National Party's most effective politicians, like Sir Apirana Ngata and Hekia Parata.
