Peters makes last stab for Northland votes
New Zealand First leader Winston Peters has wound up his campaign in Whangārei, reminding Northland voters of what they have received over the last three years.
He says three years ago the region was marginalized and forgotten.
Since then Taitokerau has benefited from a stable dollar, three years of record primary industry exports, and a multitude of projects from planting of millions of trees, fixing up wharfs and jetties, funding a convention centre and the Hundertwasser Gallery in Whangārei, as well as upgrading and expanding the rail network into the region.
He says when other MPs have gone down to Wellington to get crumbs from the table – New Zealand First got the table.
Mr Peters says every project in the north is a New Zealand First project in the coalition government – but it’s not getting the credit for it, nor for the stability it brought to the coalition.
New Zealand First hopes Shane Jones can take the Northland seat to guarantee its return to parliament, but he has not enjoyed the kind of support Mr Peters mustered for his surprise by-election win in 2015 when Labour did not stand and National's candidate was relatively unknown.
