Hastings gets rangatahi court

The 16th rangatahi court and the first in the Hawke’s Bay was launched yesterday at Te Aranga Marae in Flaxmere.
Principal Youth Court Judge John Walker says Te Kōti Rangatahi ki Heretaunga will be a significant addition to the approaches available to the Youth Court in the region where two thirds of those appearing are Māori.
It will allow the court to address the underlying causes of offending.
Rangatahi courts aim to provide the best possible rehabilitative care for young offenders by reconnecting them with their cultural identity, and meaningfully involving local Māori in the process.
