Tip fight leaches into harbour clean up hui

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff says a new agreement to clean up the Kaipara Harbour highlights the importance of setting the right conditions for any landfill in the Dome Valley.
Mr Goff was at Waihaua Marae in Tinopai on Friday for the signing of a memorandum of understanding bringing together local and central government and iwi.
Councils and iwi will jointly oversees the clean-up effort, which is funded with a $100 million contribution from government COVID-19 relief funds and matching contributions from councils.
During the hui Ngāti Whātua raised its opposition to the Dome Valley tip, but Mr Goff says it’s unfair to compare it with the harbourside tips that did so much damage to the Manukau Harbour in the past.
"Sadly we have to have landfills. We're trying to phase those out with recycling and reusing materials but the bottom line for any landfill anywhere was that it not damage the environment, that it not be prone to leaching, and that all of the techniques are put in place to make it environmentally secure from damaging waterways and harbours," he says.
