Kennedy Bay to Coromandel pest fence proposed
Waikato Regional Council has reignited concerns about fencing off parts of the Coromandel Peninsula.
Planning for a fence between Kennedy Bay and Koputauaki just north of Coromandel township is included in a $390,000 grant it has awarded to a new company, Te Ara Hou Kennedy Bay Ltd, managed by a former Department of Conservation employee.
Reihana Robinson from the Upper Coromandel Landcare Association says a similar proposal 15 years ago for a fence from Waikawau to Colville failed after overwhelming opposition from the people who were to be fenced in.
The Ara Hou proposal also includes aerial 1080 drops in what Ms Robinson says would be a major shift to privatisation of poison drops.
