Three reps possible for Tamaki Makaurau
Former Labour MP Georgina Beyer says Māori voters have a great opportunity to be strategic in Tāmaki Makaurau.
Incumbent Peeni Henare is just a few percentage points ahead of the Māori Party’s John Tamihere, according to a Curia-Māori Television poll, with the Greens’ Marama Davidson also in double digits.
Ms Beyer says voters need to consider that with Mr Henare and Ms Davidson having high list positions, the only one who has to win the seat to get into parliament is Mr Tamihere.
"They could have the clean sweep, all of them in there, and that campaign the Māori Party and particularly JT have been pushing, 'we want the candidate vote.' There could be Labour, the Greens and the Māori Party there, although I have suggested the Māori Party, if they are lucky enough to get in this election, maybe do their first term on the cross benches," she says.
