Marae spend up upsets tax zealots

A planned allocation of remaining Provincial Growth Fund pūtea towards fixing up marae around the country is enraging ACT and its supporters.
ACT leader David Seymour says Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones is going to announce $100 million of spending, including some in the Northland electorate he’s standing in.
He accused New Zealand First and Labour of using a slush fund of taxpayers’ money to try to buy votes less than two weeks out from the election.
The Taxpayers’ Union says the announcement of such politically targeted spending so close to the election in breach of a long-standing political convention, and doing in Northland is extremely inappropriate.
Spokesperson Louis Holbrook says he hopes that no taxpayer monies were used in the purchase of Mr Jones’ hat.
