Kahungunu picks for emerging artist awards
Two Ngāti Kahungunu singer-songwriters have been given a career boost by winning emerging artist tohu at this year’s National Waiata Māori Music Awards.
Sam Love, who won the over-25 category, has a Bachelor in Creative Practice Music degree from Eastern Institute of Technology’s IDEAschool of Music.
Known on stage as SIIAM, 31, Ngāti Kahungunu, he combines silky vocals with story-telling music.
Teia Kennedy, who has the under-25 award, was a finalist in 2018 and 2019.
Now a music teacher in Auckland, the 23-year-old has played solo acoustic shows all over New Zealand and overseas.
The award will allow the pair to work alongside some of the Waiata Māori Music Awards ambassadors, to learn and further their skills in all areas of music.
This year’s awards will be presented at a virtual event on Friday evening.
