Kia mataara as nation returns to Taumata Tuatahi
Kia mataara, be vigilant.
That’s the advice from Māori pandemic response group Te Rōpū Whakakaupapa Urutā as Auckland prepares to go back to Level 1 tomorrow night.
Co-chair Dr Rawiri Jansen says it’s better to think of it as level one plus.
"The basics have to be something we are going to be doing for a very long time: great handwashing, social distancing. Urutā's really supporting people using masks so when you go out of the house, wear a mask. That's clearly really helpful. Around the world we can see how helpful that is and let's not mention the White House – there's more people from the White House in hospital for COVID than in the whole of New Zealand," he says.
Dr Jansen says a break out from an isolation hotel is almost inevitable, and the best protection is that people with symptoms keep getting checked.
