Hayes prays for political points
Nationals' Māori spokesperson Jo Hayes is defending her leader for a prayerful photo op.
Judith Collins has come under fire for a week of deliberately highlighting her Christian faith, capped by the picture of her in an empty church before casting her ballot.
Ms Hayes compared it with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern wearing a head covering while visiting mosques in the wake of the Christchurch massacres.
"You will notice that through the (time of the) Muslim attacks I did not don a hijab because it is their religion, it is their belief, and I respect that, but what people are saying about Judith bending her knee, she's a what did she call herself – a liberal Anglican or Presbyterian or whatever – and that's her choice, but it is no different from donning a hijab when you are not a Muslim person," she says.
