The Māori Party Waiariki candidate believes a poll showing him 12 percentage points behind means he's in with a chance.
The Curia-Māori Television poll showed incumbent Tamati Coffey at 38 percent support and Rawiri Waititi at 26 percent, with 24 percent undecided.
Mr Waititi says that shows people are ready for change.
He says Waiariki has always been a Māori Party strong-hold and his campaign has been focussed on regaining their trust and instilling hope.
