Canal St tree rally will challenge Auckland mayor
A group trying to save a stand of native trees in Avondale from developers says if Auckland mayor Phil Goff and his council are serious about their Urban Ngahere Strategy they must save the Canal Road trees.
The group hopes to present an 8500-signature petition to the mayor at a rally at Aotea Square later this morning.
Zane Wedding, who is part of a group of arborists who have been sitting in the Canal Road trees for several weeks, says there is no other similar collection of old native trees in Auckland.
While some of the trees have been lost to the chainsaws, more than half remain, including two rare black maire and a kawaka.
He says it they are allowed to fall while the council stands by, the city is not worthy of the pohutukawa flower as its emblem.
