Artificial intelligence learns reo for mental health
A web based service that uses artificial intelligence to give basic mental health counseling is now offering a te reo Māori option.
Clearhead’s site gives users a series of questions, and the AI can analyse the responses and recommend helpful resources.
Chief executive Dr Angela Lim says Māori make up 40 percent of patients in the mental health system, yet only three percent of clinical staff in the sector identify as Māori, and an even smaller number are fluent in te reo.
She says using the language will put some patients at ease.
"So if you use te reo Māori, use terms that are familiar and matches the world view of Māori better, it is important in identifying they do have a problem," Dr Lim says.
