A new kura kaupapa in Kaitaia is under pressure from its landlord to take down its flag.
Kaiako Wikatana Popata says Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Tūtūtarakihi opened at the Wireless Road property two weeks ago, but now the landlord claims neighbours want the tino rangatiratanga flag down.
He says the school, which is a satellite of Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Hoani Waititi, has had a chilly welcome from locals.
"We go through a lot to set up a kura kaupapa with the pitiful funding we get from the ministry and then we are getting backlash from the local Pākehā round here, mainly about our flag, so it is a never-ending struggle," Mr Popata says.
