Early action stops tree felling

Native tree protesters today stopped contractors from cutting down native trees at Avondale.
Steve Abel says after an anonymous tip-off his group assembled at the Canal Rd site before dawn, with 10 climbers positioning themselves in trees, four people locking on to felled trees, and three locking themselves to half-tonne barrels, he says.
When a dozen police, twenty security guards and a large digger on a trailer arrived around 7:45 am, one group of protesters blocked police from getting on to the property while another sat on the truck and digger.
The contractors gave up around 9.30 am and negotiated with protesters to allow the driver to take the digger back to their yard.
Mr Abel says the protest ended about 10.30am with a karakia by Ngāti Whātua kaumātua Rihari Nahi.
