Maori Party wants new child agency

The Māori Party is proposing a new entity to take over responsibility for Māori children who now come under the care of Oranga Tamariki.
Te Taitokerau candidate Mariameno Kapa-Kingi says the independent mokopuna Māori entity will be responsible for the care of all mokopuna Māori in Aotearoa.
It would be funded with $600 million of public funding and will establish a partnership network across Māori organisations, hapū, and iwi, to ensure mokopuna Māori remain connected to their whakapapa.
She says it’s a way for Māori to reclaim their tino rangatiratanga as protected under Article 2 of Te Tiriti in respect of their greatest taonga, their mokopuna.
