Funds set aside for Tairawhiti log port

The ball is now firmly in Ngāti Porou’s court to get a wharf to get the East Coast’s timber harvest away by sea.
Infrastructure Minister Shane Jones on Saturday announced the Government is setting aside up to $45 million for new marine infrastructure in northern Te Tairāwhiti.
The proposal for a barge terminal has divided opinion on the coast, with some seeing it as a way to reduce the numbers of trucks on the road and others opposing it on environmental grounds.
Mr Jones says it would increase economic activity in the region and provide jobs in an area that has been long neglected.
He says officials will now work with iwi, businesses, and coastal shipping operators, to develop a proposal that is economically viable and sustainable, has broad community and local and wider iwi support.
