Parekawhia McLean to head criminal review team


Waikato Tainui governing body chair Parekawhia McLean has been appointed chief executive of Te Kāhui Tātari Ture, the new Criminal Cases Review Commission.
Chief commissioner Colin Carruthers says Ms McLean, who affiliates to Ngāti Mahanga-Hourua, Waikato and Ngāti Maniapoto, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the role.
That includes working for both crown and iwi entities and in her leadership roles,
She wiill lead a specialist group of investigators and legal experts who will review applications and investigate cases on behalf of the commission, which can then decide whether to send them to an appeal court.
Te Kāhui Tātahi Ture began receiving applications for review of convictions and sentences on July 1 this year.
Ms McLean is currently the director of strategy and infrastructure at Counties Manukau District Health Board.
She will start her new job in November.
