Wānanga returns to training unemployed
Te Wānanga o Aotearoa is going back to its roots, running a work readiness programme in the King Country for unemployed rangatahi as well as those whose jobs were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
It has secured almost $900,000 from the Provincial Growth Fund for the two year Wānanga to Work programme targeting Waitomo, Te Kuiti and Ōtorohanga with a mix of short courses and seminars, apprenticeship support and longer skills training courses.
Chief executive Te Ururoa Flavell says it’s an opportunity to work with Ngāti Maniapoto and with employers to address some of the barriers to employment.
"There’s some of our rangatahi that need a bit of a hand, I supposed even going to apply for a job, cvs, getting a driver's licence, first aid certificate, health and safety preparation, and it may even start by getting out of bed and getting to work on time," he says.
Te Ururoa Flavell says Te Rohe Pōtae has been particularly hard hit by the pandemic because tourism was a major employer.
