Māori Party added to TVNZ debate

TVNZ has backtracked and invited the Māori Party to take part in its multi-party political leaders’ debate.
Co-leader John Tamihere says the election delay allowed time for the pressure coming on the broadcaster, including from the Race Relations Commissioner, to have an effect.
He says there were compelling arguments.
"What TVNZ agreed was firstly we have had constitutional representation in the parliament. Secondly, under MMP the seven Māori seats play a significant role in determining who holds government," he says.
John Tamihere says the polls taken by the television networks are of no use to Māori voters because of the low Māori sample size.
John Tamihere will represent the Māori Party at the October 8 TVNZ debate, while co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer will front the October 3 debate on TV3’s The Nation.
