Existing conditions heighten COVID threat

Associate Health Minister Peeni Henare says the Auckland COVID-19 cluster is a reminder of the need to address longstanding health inequities in the Māori and Pacific communities.
He says the cluster appears to be winding down, which is good news for those missing the opportunity to visit with whānau.
But the co-morbidity factor was one that had health authorities worrying about the outbreak getting any further into vulnerable populations.
"For those who suffer from diabetes or obesity-related matters, they will continue to be a concern for us as COVID-19 is still in our community. While COVID might be the problem here it could end up diabetes is the killer so all of the warnings are still there for us," Mr Henare says.
Peeni Henare says he is pleased at the way people continue to show they understand the need for social distancing and wearing masks.
