Research backs whānau-centred health model

The Minister for Whānau Ora is welcoming new research showing whānau-centred approaches in primary health care services are key to achieving better health and wellbeing outcomes for Māori and Pacific whānau.
The independent report by Moana Research, Ihi Research and FEM Limited recommends an adaptive, high-trust commissioning environment between the Crown, Māori and Pacific providers, whānau and hapori/communities.
Peeni Henare says it’s evidence the Ministry of Health should introduce a commissioning for outcomes model.
He says whānau-centred health services adopted by Māori and Pacific healthcare providers during the second wave of COVID-19 proved effective.
Mr Henare says the research will inform the development of a business case for further investment in whānau and community-led service provision.
